Watch – About the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

The Tonight Show is a long-running American late-night TV talk show. Since 1954, it has been broadcast 1954 on NBC and NBC, and it is the standard by that other shows in its category are assessed. The show has been awarded multiple Emmy Awards.

Apart from the brief (and controversial) change to a magazine-style newscast in 1957, the structure of the program has remained extremely consistent throughout its run. It is in many ways similar to the format of a variety show; the Tonight Show combines a weekly monologue from the host as well as comic sketches and musical guests and interviews with celebrities that are all infused by the distinctive style and personality of the host, resulting in a weekly entertainment show that has a pop-culture focus. The show has had six main hosts throughout its time: Steve Allen (1954-57), Jack Paar (1957-62), Johnny Carson (1962-92), Jay Leno (1992-2009, 2010), Conan O’Brien (2009-10) and Jimmy Fallon (2014- )–as numerous guests and sidekicks or cohosts, among the most prominent of them, included Ed McMahon, Carson’s longtime partner. Each host brought their unique talents and strengths to the program: Allen was known primarily as a talented comedian who had musical and improvisatory abilities, while Paar was more admired for his ability as a talker. Carson provided a totally different style and tone, bringing the show back to its comic roots, relocating the show away from New York City to Burbank, California and becoming one of the most adored characters in American television during his almost thirty-year time in the role of “king of late night.”

Following Carson’s departure, Leno took over as host, despite some controversy. David Letterman (another well-known comedian with a late-night program of his own that aired on NBC following the success of The Tonight Show) was thought as a possibility by many (including Carson himself) to be the natural heir to Carson. He was disappointed that he wasn’t chosen; Letterman left NBC for other networks, CBS, as well as was awarded his late-night program that ran alongside The Tonight Show, which was dubbed The Late Show hosted by David Letterman (1993-2015). When late-night talk show shows were a rage (Arsenio Hall, Chevy Chase, Magic Johnson, and other shows had less-than-successful performances that they created), Letterman proved to be the first real opposition in the battle for late-night supremacy of The Tonight Show. Both shows, though similar in style, eventually at war to be the top show in terms of ratings, but The Tonight Show typically prevailed.

In hopes of avoiding another controversial change like the one in the year 1992. NBC announced in 2004 that Leno was to become replaced by O’Brien, who was hosting The Late Night featuring Conan O’Brien, the show that aired on the network following the show The Tonight Show. Since O’Brien was the host of the show, however, The Tonight Show lost viewers. In an attempt to boost ratings and bring back Leno to the late-night slot (after his unsuccessful run with Talk Shows at an earlier time), NBC suggested that The Tonight Show be pushed forward by 30 minutes to allow for a new show for Leno. O’Brien, however, resisted the suggestion, and soon speculation began that Leno was set to return to the show The Tonight Show. After many weeks of heated talks, O’Brien resigned from the show at the end of January, and Leno was back as the host in March. The show’s ratings soon increased, and in 2013, Leno declared that he would step out as host next year.

In February 2014, Jimmy Fallon, who had replaced O’Brien on Late Night. He, was able to host The Tonight Show and moved it back into New York City. He brought to the Late Night show the emphasis on comedy sketches instead of the lengthy opening monologue favored by Carson and Leno, and his band, the Roots, remains his favourite band. The show was consistently high in ratings, especially among younger viewers, but his generally non-political stance caused a slight drop in the number of viewers after the year 2016.
