Many people assume that the job of the Scrum Master is not a full time but a part-time job and think you can play a part of the developer during a task or that a Product Owner also works as a Scrum Master role with his job. There are some debates happening recently about whether the Scrum Master Job should be full time or Part-time. Many of the debates have a different opinion on whether a team was performed better with a full-time Scrum Master or with a part-time scrum master.
When we look at the Scrum Guide to resolve this question it does not provide an answer to rule this out, however, it won’t work if you are new to Scrum, because the Scrum Master’s job is over and above just being a provider during the Scrum projects. New Scrum Masters might be nervous about the job that they have to play as the future Scrum Masters. On the other hand, certified Scrum Masters have to truly realize the responsibilities of a Scrum Master to understand the dynamic role they have to perform. There are lots of certifications for the scrum master and one of the examples is “agile scrum certification”.
In the current business industry, many organizations seem the role of a Scrum Master as a part-time worker. There are some reasons why they define the Scrum Masters role as a part-timer. The organization might be facing the shortage of human resources to place a dedicated Scrum Master or the organization does not think the Scrum Master’s role is important than the full-time role.
The achievement of a Scrum project distributes equally on the shoulders of the Product Owner, the Development Team, and the Scrum Master. The developer job itself a full-time job and it can create an obvious conflict when a developer also carries out the role of a Scrum Master. This will affect the objective that is required in a Scrum Master role. Even a developer also involves on other of his developer’s project and away from the Scrum Master Duties, so what happens when the role of scrum master wins out. There must be some problems to resolve, requirements to realize, discussions to be performed. And when the Scrum Master is present to assist the team and guides the team from the trouble, just release the complexity and stress. Moreover, it makes much easier to know where to concentrate on.
Now, let’s focus on the problem where the job of Scrum Master is not measured considerable enough to be a full-time role. Sprints in Scrum, different steps in the waterfall, are intensive phases of action where development takes place. Any obstructions that are not fixed immediately can have an effect on the failure or the success of the sprint. The Scrum Master not only works on obstructions as and when they land but also has extreme foresight to spot possible issues and also make an environment that can help avoid any issues to take place. How can a part-time scrum master handle this job is a question.
The logic is, the Scrum Master activities are to ensure that all the team members performance is getting better continuously, to explore better ways for the coordination and integration of the team. To make flawless way for the team to grow and work. To remove hurdles and run interference and barriers from achieving the goals. They do this by concentrating on the team and its requirements. They are the activist of the Scrum Processes working on the cycle of continuous progress and when the team deviates and back to the former methods, which they will when fresh to scrum and Agile, the Scrum Master’s duty is to bring them back. As it’s a common human nature that we deviate to the past quite frequently. So, if the teams will deviate specifically when they are in pressure, it’s the Scrum Master’s responsibility to push over the gap to bring a team to be performance. A part-time Scrum Master facing two jobs will most probably do the same.
If someone divides the job between the developer and Scrum Master, I am not believing that he will master both. You may be a good Scrum Master or a good developer.
At some point in time, you have to choose which type of job you want to do. Unfortunately, many of the companies out there are present so that a good way to get a handsome salary is to go away from the development track. The consequence of this is most frequently losing expert developers and facing unproductive leaders!
The other thing that I have in my mind is related to the responsibilities of work that is very essential to prove a good Scrum Master. The perception of the people is that a Scrum Master is the one who enforces deadlines and time frames, organizes meetings, and answers to the weaknesses people explicitly report. Certainly, many Scrum Masters only work as same, but if we observe a team that has great proficiency in undertaking the tasks that no one in the past believed possible, most probably the Scrum Master did too much than what I have mentioned before.
The Scrum Master absolutely assumes the work of a leader that’s why I suggest a full-time role for the scrum masters. He prepares and counselor’s team participants both at an individual and a team level to make the best with the team. He also works hard and makes sure the members of the team cooperate with each other effectively as well as efficiently and all the team members deliver what they expect their selves and committed to.
Every position is different than other position, and it may be possible that the Scrum Master can try to get double and sometimes even trip amount of work done for different roles at the same time, but I would suppose that to happen with an extremely established and expert agile team. I would like to suggest that a scrum master job must be done a full-0time scrum master instead of a part-time scrum master as the role deserves a lot to do. Hope my little effort helps to understand the scrum master role.
